Owning a puppy is an exciting and busy time for you and your new furry member of the family! The first 6 months of your puppy’s life is the most crucial time for development and our Puppy PreSchool offers a great way to socialise your fur child in a safe and encouraging environment.
Join our Fear Free Puppy Preschool program as we teach you everything you need to know to help your pup grow into a confident, well-behaved and sociable dog! The classes will take you through basic manners training as well as provide you with invaluable information on all the things you need to know – such as toilet training, puppy care, health, nipping/chewing and more!

Puppy Preschool Rockdale
A puppy learns more about getting along in the world during its first few months than at any later point in its life, and that window closes faster than most new owners expect. Use those weeks well and you tend to raise a confident, settled adult dog. Miss them and small things can harden into lasting fears. That is the whole idea behind puppy preschool, and it is why a vet-run class is worth seeking out near Rockdale. Rockdale Veterinary Hospital is a family-owned practice in Sydney’s St George area, caring for pets since 2022, and our puppy classes run under the eye of the same vets and nurses who look after your puppy’s health.
Why the First Few Months Shape the Dog Your Puppy Becomes
There is a short, early stretch in a puppy’s development, roughly the first three to four months, when its brain is wired to accept new experiences as normal. Sounds, surfaces, people of all kinds, gentle handling, and the company of other dogs: whatever a puppy meets calmly during this socialisation window tends to stay easy for the rest of its life. The same experiences introduced later, after the window narrows, are far more likely to be met with caution or fear.
So the honest answer to “when should we start” is: as young as it can safely be done, which means once your puppy has had its first vaccinations and is old enough to mix with others under sensible precautions. Waiting until a puppy is fully grown to begin training is the common mistake, because by then the easiest learning has already passed.
Is it actually worth doing? For the great majority of puppies, yes. A few weeks of positive early experience heads off the avoidable behaviour issues, the lunging on the lead, the panic at the vet, the dog that cannot cope with visitors, that are far harder to unwind once they have set in. Good early socialisation is not a luxury add-on. It is part of raising a dog that is a pleasure to live with.

What a Vet-Run Puppy Preschool Class Actually Looks Like
A great deal of what you find when you go looking for puppy classes is run by independent dog trainers, by classes at the back of a pet shop, or by booking platforms that line up a session for you. Plenty of those are perfectly good. What a class run by your veterinary clinic adds is oversight that joins your puppy’s behaviour to its health, in one place, with people who can act on what they see.
Inside a class, the work is gentle and positive. Puppies meet other puppies of a similar age and stage and learn to read each other, supervised so play stays friendly and no nervous puppy gets overwhelmed. There is early, kind handling of paws, ears and mouths, the sort that makes future nail trims, check-ups and our vet dentistry work a non-event. There are the first foundations of manners, the basics that make a puppy easier to live with, taught with rewards rather than corrections. And there is the quiet benefit of a puppy learning that the clinic itself is a friendly place, so vet visits later in life start from a calmer footing.
Two things matter more in a clinic setting than anywhere else. The first is that it is vaccination-safe and controlled: classes are run with the disease-risk precautions a vet takes seriously, in a managed environment rather than an open park. The second is that the people watching your puppy are trained to notice. A skin issue, a sign of pain, a temperament worry, a developmental concern: spotted early by someone who can examine and treat your puppy at our animal hospital, not just point it out. Puppy preschool runs from our clinic at 335 Forest Rd in Bexley, an easy trip for owners across Rockdale and the surrounding St George suburbs, with pups coming of age and joining from puppy preschool in Bexley, puppy preschool in Kogarah, puppy preschool in Hurstville, puppy preschool in Arncliffe and puppy preschool in Earlwood. We are open seven days: Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 7:00pm, Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday from 10:00am to 3:00pm, closed on public holidays. The simplest way to start is to get in touch and ask about the next intake, since places are limited and puppies need to join while they are still young enough to get the most from it.
On cost, the fair answer is to ask. A puppy class is not insured veterinary treatment, and we will not pretend one can be claimed on pet insurance.
