Animal Hospital Rockdale: Full Hospital-Grade Care Under One Roof

The day a vet says your dog needs surgery, or that a lump has to be scanned, the next question is where it actually gets done. For an animal hospital Rockdale pet owners can reach in minutes, the answer is here at 335 Forest Rd in Sydney’s St George area, where the diagnosis, the operation and the recovery all happen in one building. We are Rockdale Veterinary Hospital, and owner and head vet Dr Robert Kay does our orthopaedic surgery himself, so a complex case does not automatically mean a drive across the city.

From Routine Visits to Surgery, In One Building

Plenty of visits start small and stay small: a vaccination, a puppy or kitten check, a wellness exam for an older cat. We do all of that, every day. The reason to choose somewhere with surgery and scanning on site is for the day a visit does not stay small, when a problem found in the consult room can be investigated and treated in the same building, with no referral somewhere new.

Under one roof at 335 Forest Rd we cover health checks and consultations, vaccinations and our puppy preschool, our vet dentistry, desexing, skin and dermatology, and behaviour work, through to in-clinic diagnostics and surgery when a case calls for them, plus cat boarding.

Surgery and Diagnostics Done Under This Roof

Our in-clinic diagnostics run on site: digital X-ray, ultrasound, heart scanning and pathology, so a sick or injured pet can be worked up the same day rather than booked in elsewhere next week.

On the surgical side, Dr Kay performs both routine and advanced procedures here: general soft-tissue surgery, dentistry under anaesthesia, desexing, and orthopaedic work such as TPLO repair for a ruptured cruciate ligament. TPLO is a serious knee operation many general clinics send away; doing it in-house means your dog is operated on, monitored and recovered by people who already know its history. When a case needs a specialist beyond what a general practice offers, we have referral access and arrange it for you.

Fear Free Care, Right Through to the Operating Table

Being Fear Free is not just about a gentle consult. It shapes how a frightened animal is handled at every step, including the parts of a visit that worry owners most. We do not scruff cats and we do not muzzle dogs; we work at the animal’s pace, use gentle handling, and reach for calming medication when a pet needs help to settle, and the whole team is qualified in these techniques.

That matters most when surgery or a scan is involved: a calmer animal going under anaesthetic is a safer one, and one that has not been frightened beforehand recovers better. Standard consultations run a full 30 minutes, and separate dog and cat consulting rooms mean a nervous cat is not waiting nose-to-nose with a dog before it has even been seen.

Inside Rockdale Veterinary Hospital, and Dr Robert Kay

We are a family-owned practice, and we opened Rockdale Veterinary Hospital in 2022 to take a pet’s emotional welfare as seriously as its physical health. The reviews owners have left us sit at 4.9 stars, 230 of them. Around half of our new clients arrive because someone they know sent them, which for a young practice is the figure we value most.

Dr Robert Kay owns the practice and works as our head vet. He is a graduate of the Royal Veterinary College and the surgeon behind our orthopaedic and advanced work, supported by a team of skilled veterinary nurses. The reason we can keep a cruciate repair or a tricky diagnostic in-house is that the experience to do it is on staff.

Open 7 Days, and What Happens After Hours

We are open every day, with extended weekday hours so a visit fits around work and school: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 7:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday 10:00am to 3:00pm. We close on public holidays.

It is worth being clear on one thing, because the question comes up: we are a full-service practice, but we are not a 24-hour one. During our hours, call us straight away on 02 9123 6888 and we will see an urgent case as fast as we can. Outside them, your pet is still covered: we refer after-hours emergencies to Veterinary Specialists of Sydney (VSOS) at 106 Parraweena Road, Miranda, on 02 8376 8767, who run an around-the-clock emergency service.

How the Cost of Care Actually Works

Surgery and diagnostics are where cost worries hit hardest, so here is the honest version. We keep our pricing accessible on purpose, to put good care within reach of more families. If your pet is insured, that counts even more: we bill most pet insurers directly on your behalf, so you are not fronting the full amount of a treatment or surgery bill and waiting weeks to be reimbursed. For an operation, that can be the difference between going ahead and putting it off. What a procedure costs depends on what your pet needs, so we give you a clear estimate before anything is booked.

Finding Us From Rockdale

We sit just over the Rockdale border at 335 Forest Rd, Bexley, a few minutes from the centre of Rockdale and easy to reach off the main road through, with parking on site. Rockdale is right next to Bexley North and Banksia, and owners after an animal hospital in Arncliffe or an animal hospital in Kogarah make the same short trip, so wherever you are coming from across the area, you are a short, ordinary drive from the door, not a haul across the city. For a pet that is unwell or stressed, that closeness is the quiet advantage of having all of this near home.

Book Your Rockdale Pet In

Whether your pet is due for a routine check or facing something bigger, getting started is the same: book online any time, or call us on 02 9123 6888, and we will find you a time this week.

Questions Rockdale Pet Owners Ask Us

Line Separator

No. We are open 7 days a week with extended weekday hours, Monday to Friday until 7:00pm, but we are not a 24-hour service. During our hours, call us straight away on 02 9123 6888 for an urgent case. Outside them, we refer emergencies to Veterinary Specialists of Sydney in Miranda (02 8376 8767), who operate around the clock.

Both are done on site at 335 Forest Rd. We have digital X-ray, ultrasound, heart scanning and pathology in the building, and we perform dentistry, desexing, and general and orthopaedic surgery here, including TPLO cruciate ligament repair. We only refer on when a case genuinely needs a specialist beyond what a general practice provides.

What it costs depends on what your pet needs, so we give you a clear estimate before anything goes ahead. We keep pricing accessible, and for insured pets we bill most insurers directly so you pay only the gap on treatment and surgery rather than the whole amount up front.

The range of what can be done in one place. Diagnostics, dentistry, and general and orthopaedic surgery all happen here under one roof, by the same team that knows your pet, with Dr Robert Kay performing the advanced surgical work himself. For a Rockdale pet, that means fewer hand-offs and one team carrying your animal’s care from the first look to the last stitch.
