Vet Carlton: Gentle, Fear Free Care Beside Kogarah and Allawah
Type “vet Carlton” into your phone and the map cannot quite decide where you live, because there is a Carlton in Sydney’s St George area, one of the areas we care for, and another in inner Melbourne. Yours is the quiet pocket beside Kogarah and Allawah. Your nearest gentle vet sits a few minutes up the road at Rockdale Veterinary Hospital on Forest Rd, where no cat gets scruffed and no dog gets muzzled. Owner and head vet Dr Robert Kay has more than 20 years behind the consult table. If a trip to the vet rattles your pet, the people half a suburb away treat that as the thing to solve, not an inconvenience to rush past.
Two Carltons, One Local Vet for Yours
Only one Carlton is your neighbourhood: the St George pocket between Kogarah and Allawah, a short hop from our clinic in Bexley. The other is hundreds of kilometres south in Melbourne, which is why a quick search can feel oddly out of step with where you actually are. For your Carlton, the closest full veterinary hospital is ours, and getting your pet seen means a few familiar streets and a car park you can pull straight into, not a long drive or a freeway.

What Gentle, Fear Free Care Looks Like for a Nervous Pet
Plenty of pets decide they hate the vet long before they reach the door, and Fear Free is our answer to that. Every vet on the team is qualified in it. In practice we slow the whole visit down: we let a frightened cat stay in the bottom half of its carrier, give an anxious dog a moment to settle, and reach for calming medication when a pet genuinely needs help to relax rather than forcing the issue. Standard consultations run a full 30 minutes, so your pet is not hurried and you have room to ask everything you came in to ask. We also keep separate dog and cat consulting rooms, so a wary cat is not unsettled by a room full of dogs before its appointment has started.
We welcome all sizes and breeds!
- Please call us as price is dependent on your pet’s sex, species and weight
- Day procedure available Monday-Friday
- All desexing surgeries include additional intravenous fluids throughout surgery, pain relief for 3 days at home, an Elizabethan collar and a post-op recheck
Who Cares for Your Carlton Pet at Rockdale Veterinary Hospital
Rockdale Veterinary Hospital is a family-owned clinic, and since opening in 2022 we have cared for more than 5,000 local pets. Owner and head vet Dr Robert Kay works across general medicine, routine and advanced surgery, and orthopaedic work including TPLO cruciate ligament repair, alongside a team of skilled veterinary nurses. Around half of new clients come to us on a recommendation from someone who already brings their pet in. We support local causes too, including Greyhound Rescue and the international work of Animals Fiji.

Health Checks, Dentistry, Surgery: Your Pet’s Care Under One Roof
Most of what a Carlton pet needs across its life happens in our building, so you are rarely sent elsewhere. That spans health checks and consultations, vaccinations, and puppy and kitten care for owners just starting out, including puppy preschool in Carlton. It spans in-clinic diagnostics with digital X-ray and ultrasound, plus vet dentistry near Carlton, desexing, and general and orthopaedic surgery. When a case genuinely needs a specialist, we arrange the referral and stay in the loop. The rest, diagnostics and surgery included, stays in-house near Carlton.
Getting Here From Carlton, and When We’re Open
We are at 335 Forest Rd, Bexley, a short and direct run from Carlton through Allawah and Kogarah, where the same clinic looks after pets for general vet care in Allawah and general vet care in Kogarah, with parking on site. We are open 7 days: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 7:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday 10:00am to 3:00pm. Those weeknight hours until 7:00pm matter if your pet only seems off once you are home from work, and the weekend opening means a Saturday limp or a Sunday upset stomach does not have to wait. Book by phone on 02 9123 6888, by email at team@rockdalevets.com.au, or online whenever it suits you. Public holidays are the one exception, when we close.

How We Keep Vet Care Affordable
Worrying about the cost of care is normal, and we would rather you ask than put off a visit. Our everyday pricing is set to be genuinely accessible, and if your pet is insured we work directly with most pet insurers and bill them for you, so for hospital treatment and surgery you pay only the gap. That removes the lump-sum surprise that stops many owners booking at all. Because costs vary with what your pet actually needs, we will talk you through the likely cost before anything goes ahead, rather than quote a figure that would not fit your situation. You will always know where you stand first.
