Your Local Vet Near Me: Animal Hospital, Dentistry and Puppy Preschool Across the St George Area

Whatever your pet needs today, it usually comes down to one of four kinds of help: a vet near me, an animal hospital near me, vet dentistry near me, or a puppy preschool near me. All four sit in one place. Rockdale Veterinary Hospital is a Fear Free practice at 335 Forest Rd, Bexley, in Sydney’s St George area, open every day and looking after pets right across the bayside suburbs. Whether it is a yearly check, a worrying lump, a mouth that needs sorting, or a new puppy you want to start well, the same team handles it. Call 02 9123 6888 or book online, and we will point you to the right care.

The Four Kinds of Care, and Which One Your Pet Needs

Most visits fall into one of four jobs, and knowing which is yours makes booking quick.

General vet care is the everyday work: health checks, vaccinations, and consultations, all in unhurried appointments, with the same gentle handling whether your pet is a fortnight old or fifteen. If your animal is well and due, or off-colour and you are not sure why, this is where you start.

When a check-up turns into something bigger, that is where our animal hospital comes in: in-house surgery, including TPLO cruciate ligament repair, alongside digital X-ray, ultrasound, pathology and dentistry, so a serious case is diagnosed and treated under one roof rather than referred across the city. The plan for after hours is set out below.

Through our vet dentistry we cover dog and cat dental work done under a safe general anaesthetic: a proper scale and polish, dental X-rays, and extractions where a tooth has to come out. A complex case is referred to a veterinary dental specialist when that is the right call.

Then there is our puppy preschool, a vet-run socialisation class for the pup already at home, with a vet and nurse in the room. It is a structured training course, not a breeder and not a daycare. Each of these has its own page with the full detail, so once you know your job, you can read straight on.

One Local Practice Behind All Four Services: Rockdale Veterinary Hospital

Rockdale Veterinary Hospital is a family-owned practice, caring for more than 5,000 local pets since 2022, and rated 4.9 across 230 reviews. Owner and head vet Dr Robert Kay performs the orthopaedic surgery himself. Around half the pets we see come to us on a recommendation from someone who already brings theirs here.

What ties it together is how we handle an animal. Every vet on the team is Fear Free qualified, so we do not scruff cats or muzzle dogs. We use patience, gentle handling and calming techniques instead, and separate dog and cat consulting rooms keep a nervous patient calmer. The 30-minute consult is deliberate: it gives an anxious pet time to settle, and gives you time to talk through what is going on.

The Suburbs We Look After Across St George and Bayside

Pets come to us from right across the St George and Bayside area. We are the local vet, animal hospital, dental clinic and puppy preschool for Rockdale, Bexley and Bexley North, for Arncliffe, Banksia and Wolli Creek over towards the airport, and for Kogarah, Carlton, Allawah and Hurstville to the south. Earlwood, Kingsgrove, Bardwell Park and Bardwell Valley sit a short run to the west, and from the foreshore we look after Ramsgate Beach, Kyeemagh and Monterey.

A few of these share their name with places elsewhere. The Carlton, Banksia, Monterey and Kogarah we mean are the ones here in Sydney’s St George area, NSW, not their namesakes interstate or overseas. Each suburb has its own page for all four services, so you can see how close you are and what we handle from where you live.

Open 7 Days, and the Honest Answer on After Hours

We are open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 7:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday 10:00am to 3:00pm, closed on public holidays. Those long weekday evenings mean most pets can be seen the same day without taking time off work.

We are not a 24-hour emergency hospital, and we will not pretend otherwise. If something goes wrong while we are open, call us straight away on 02 9123 6888 and we will fit your pet in. Outside our hours, after-hours emergencies are referred to Veterinary Specialists of Sydney (VSOS) at 106 Parraweena Road, Miranda, on 02 8376 8767. Worth saving that number now, so it is in your phone before the night you need it.

What Care Costs, and How Insurance Billing Works

The question we hear most across every suburb is about cost, so here is the straight version. For any treatment, surgery or dental work, you get a clear estimate before anything goes ahead, and nothing proceeds until you approve it. If your pet is insured, we bill most pet insurers directly and you pay only the gap, rather than fronting the whole amount and waiting weeks for a refund. We keep our pricing accessible on purpose, because care your pet cannot get is no use to anyone.

Puppy preschool works differently. A class is not insured treatment, so gap-only billing does not apply to it. Course pricing is confirmed when you enquire, along with the next start date and what a place involves for your pup.

Book Your Pet In, Wherever You Are in the Area

You do not have to know which kind of visit you need before you call. Tell us what is going on and we will work out whether it is a consult, a full workup, a dental check or a spot in the next puppy class. Phone 02 9123 6888, email team@rockdalevets.com.au, or book online any time, then bring your pet the short trip to 335 Forest Rd, Bexley, with parking at the door.

Questions Pet Owners Across the Area Ask Us

Line Separator

Yes. We are the local clinic for the whole St George and Bayside area, from Wolli Creek and Arncliffe through to Hurstville, Earlwood and the Ramsgate Beach foreshore. For most of these suburbs we are a short, ordinary drive, and there is parking on site.

We see urgent cases across our long opening hours seven days a week, but we are not open round the clock. After we close, emergencies go to Veterinary Specialists of Sydney in Miranda on 02 8376 8767.

Yes, and we have separate dog and cat consulting rooms to keep both calmer. Every consultation is handled gently, which matters most for the pet that dreads the carrier.

Yes. Puppy preschool is open to any pup in the area, and many owners use it to get to know us before settling on a regular clinic. Your puppy will need its first vaccinations, since the class is a controlled, vaccination-safe setting.
