Vet Dentistry Carlton
Your Carlton, NSW dog or cat can have its teeth properly cleaned, X-rayed and treated close to home, without a referral across the city. We are Rockdale Veterinary Hospital, a veterinary practice for dogs and cats at 335 Forest Rd in Bexley, a few minutes from your corner of Sydney’s St George area beside Allawah and Kogarah, where neighbours book the same care as vet dentistry in Allawah and vet dentistry in Kogarah. Vet dentistry here means a real clean below the gumline, dental X-rays and any tooth that has to come out, done in one building by the same team. Family-owned since 2022. Call 02 9123 6888 to book a dental check.
A Full Dog and Cat Dental, Done Near Home
The whole job stays in the one place, which is the point of being your local clinic rather than a referral address. We start with a pre-anaesthetic health check, then a full scale-and-polish that cleans above and below the gumline, where the disease that matters actually sits. Dental X-rays are taken in-house, because most of each tooth is hidden under the gum and a root problem never shows on the surface. A tooth too far gone is extracted, with any minor oral surgery the mouth needs, in the same visit. Only the complex cases, advanced oral surgery or root canal work, go on to a veterinary dental specialist.

Why a Proper Clean Needs the Anaesthetic
Owners ask whether the anaesthetic is really necessary, and for a clean that does any good the honest answer is yes. A dog or cat will not hold still to have each tooth probed, scaled beneath the gumline and X-rayed while awake, and that fine work where the disease hides is exactly what a real dental is for. A conscious surface scrape looks tidier but leaves the part that counts untouched, which is why we do not offer anaesthesia-free cleaning. Safe is the whole point: a health check and bloodwork beforehand, intravenous fluids and a nurse monitoring vital signs through the procedure, and pain relief on board. Our team is Fear Free certified, so a nervous pet is settled gently rather than scruffed or muzzled.
Routine Dental Clean

What a Carlton Dog or Cat Dental Costs
A fixed price quoted before anyone has looked in the mouth would only be a guess, so we do not give one. The grade of dental disease, the number of teeth that need to come out and how many X-rays the mouth calls for all move the figure. What you get instead is a clear estimate after the dental assessment, before anything goes ahead. For an insured pet it lands lighter: we bill most insurers directly, so you are not fronting the full amount and waiting to be paid back.

The Mouth Signs Worth a Check
Pets hide a sore mouth well, so dental trouble is easy to miss until it is advanced. As a general guide, the signs worth booking for are bad breath, yellow or brown tartar along the teeth, red or bleeding gums, dropping food while eating, and pawing at the mouth. None proves a problem on its own, but any one is a fair reason to have your pet looked at. It is worth treating: untreated dental disease genuinely hurts an animal that cannot say so, and catching it earlier usually means a simpler procedure with fewer teeth lost.
The Family Vets You Will Meet at Rockdale Veterinary Hospital
Your pet’s dental is led by Dr Robert Kay, owner and head vet, a Royal Veterinary College graduate with more than 20 years in companion-animal practice and Fear Free qualified, alongside skilled veterinary nurses who handle the monitoring and after-care. That depth is what lets us read a dental X-ray, judge which teeth can be saved and do the extractions in-house with confidence, the standard behind our vet dentistry service at the Bexley clinic. It is the same team you would see for general vet care or when you’re needing an animal hospital in the Carlton area. Every patient gets an unhurried 30-minute consultation, in separate dog and cat rooms so a nervous animal stays calmer.
